About this place
The Armoury of Arts is the idea of an open academy – open to the world, and in particular: to the inhabitants of our metropolis. The Armoury of Arts Project can be summed up in four words: exhibition, education, popularization and documentation. The promoter of all these activities will be the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.
In the Armoury of Arts we will present exhibitions, prepared in cooperation with cultural institutions and arts universities in Poland and Europe. We want to create a place where we can present our achievements and create common, interdisciplinary and research projects in the field of art.
In the Armoury of Arts we will educate in the field of art with a variety of tools, both for persons with knowledge of the subjects as well as for complete novices. We want to explain art, as well as promote and popularize it amongst the widest possible range of users, young and old, individuals and institutions, including schools of art and cultural institutions operating both in our metropolitan as well as throughout the Baltic Sea region.
In the Armoury of Arts we will collect – both materially and in digital form – works covering all artistic areas: paintings, spatial objects, graphic art, commercial design, drawing, posters, textiles, ceramics, design, architectural designs, photography as well as archive materials related to educators and life at the Academy.
The mentioned four areas on the ground floor of the Great Armoury will contain four modules: Galleries, Workshops, Reading Room and Collections.
The Gallery Module (exhibition area)
We will create an exhibition space for the needs of national artistic events such as the “Esteemed Graduates of Polish Academies of Fine Arts Exhibition”, presentations of individual universities, presentations of foreign universities that the Academy of Fine Arts cooperates with, permanent and temporary exhibitions presenting young painting in Gdańsk, contemporary sculpture, video art, unique design and interesting projects for industry as well as quasi-theatrical presentations and chamber concerts. The exhibition space will be a place for displaying projects, objects and unique contemporary jewellery by artists associated with the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk and its students. The Gallery will also available for other events organised in cooperation with Tricity universities, such as the Baltic Science Festival.
The Workshops Module (educational space)
We will create a new form of education, open to all interested in the practice and theory of visual arts. We will conduct open artistic workshops in studios located on the ground floor: graphic art, lithography and experimental techniques workshop, 3D mold-making workshop, weaving workshop, image animation workshop, etc.
The Reading Room Module (the dissemination and promotion of art)
We will popularise art through conducting lectures, organizing meetings with authors of artistic events, and also present information from the world of art and culture using multimedia techniques. An important element will be publishing activities – publication of lectures and materials from conference proceedings, exhibition catalogues, and above all: our own, bilingual arts magazine, enabling the presentation of research findings as well as promotion of artistic environments related to the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.
The Collections Module (material and digital collection, virtual collection of fine arts and design arts)
We will create a material and digital collection covering all artistic areas: paintings, spatial objects, graphic art, commercial design, drawing, posters, textiles, ceramics, design, architectural designs, photography as well as archive materials related to educators and life at the Academy. In cooperation with other universities we will create a virtual collection of fine arts and design arts, which will provide an opportunity for the aforementioned popularisation, exhibition and publishing activities.
